MONTpellier, Vt. (AP) — Republican Gov. Phil Scott signed a bill Wednesday to legalize online sports betting in Vermont.
“I first proposed legalizing sports betting in Vermont a few years ago, and I’m delighted that the legislature also came to an agreement,” Scott said in a statement to Vital Resources and Consumer Protection. “
Under the law, the Vermont Liquor and Lottery Department will operate sportsbooks by entering into contracts with two to six sportsbook operators. Each year, the department, in consultation with the Department of Mental Health, submits a report to the legislature on the impact of sports betting on problem gambling in Vermont.
Operators are also required to annually provide the state with a responsible gaming plan, which includes information on posting problem gambling-related material; resources for punters concerned about problem gambling; house-imposed player restrictions; and a self-exclusion plan.
