Another Planet Entertainment (APE), the Bay Area concert production company behind venues such as the Fox Theatre, Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, announced a proposal Tuesday that will take place at Historic Plaza in downtown San Francisco Free outdoor concerts.
Beginning in 2024, the plan will bring annual musical performances to three prominent downtown locations — Civic Center Plaza, Union Square and Embarcadero Plaza.
The concert series is in line with the Mayor of London’s aim to transform downtown San Francisco into a stronger global destination, including leading arts and cultural events.
The free concerts are part of a license applied by APE that calls for additional ticketed concerts at Golden Gate Park’s polo field (home to the Outside Lands) for a three-year period beginning in 2024. Ticketed concerts will take place the weekend after Outside Lands in August and use some of its infrastructure. However, these concerts are separate events from Outside Lands, with smaller, headline-focused performances.
While downtown concerts are free, Polo Fields concerts require tickets. Breed said the permit fee of $1.4 million for the two-day event and $2.1 million for the three-day event would allow the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department to continue programming and maintenance of its facilities Serve.
The city is currently facing a two-year budget deficit of $780 million.
“The proposed polo field concert will bring significant funding to our parks and programs,” Recreation and Parks general manager Phil Ginsburg said in a release.
Since it began in 2008, Outside Lands has pumped more than $1 billion into the San Francisco economy, according to Breed’s office.
The unanimous motion is tentatively scheduled to be submitted to the board of supervisors for hearing on June 22.
