When I was a kid, I grew up with Essence Magazine. Covers featuring beautiful black celebrities, models, politicians and leaders grace the cover because it gives me a sense of belonging in the world. Essence Magazine also focuses on issues important to the Black community. It screams to the world, “Here we are, and we shine with the same light.”

Today, Essence Magazine continues that mission as the premier lifestyle, fashion and beauty magazine for African American women. With its inspirational messages, intimate girlfriend-to-girlfriend tone, compelling and engaging editorial cast, and vibrant and contemporary designs, Essence is the definitive voice for today’s dynamic African-American woman. Essence is a direct reflection of the black woman’s spirit, her heart and her unique concerns. Their editorial content is designed to help women advance their lives personally, professionally, intellectually and spiritually. Sections such as Work and Wealth, Healthy Living and The Look We Love cover topics focused on career and finances, health and lifestyle, and fashion and beauty.

Now, a new original documentary series is exploring the importance of Essence Magazine, Essence time. debuted on . Friday, August 18 at 9pm ET/PT. This five-part, one-hour series celebrates the trailblazing magazine that reaches a global community of more than 20 million black women and showcases some of the most fascinating and influential force cover.

From OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, Essence time will tell how Nature It has influenced and reflected black culture in America for more than 50 years. Each episode explores a different decade — from the ’70s to today — and features first-hand commentary on the era’s greatest moments from the icons, trailblazers, employees and leaders who lived and defined them. This candid commentary is combined with never-before-seen footage and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from the worlds of entertainment, sports, politics, fashion and beauty.

Previously announced series pioneers include fashion model and icon Beverly Johnson, Johnson’s daughter Anantha Sims, Oscar-winning actresses Halle Berry and Whoopi Goldberg, Emmy-winning actress Shirley Lee Ralph, Regina Hall and Taye Diggs.iconic Nature Magazine editor Mikki Taylor, longtime editor and chief Susan L. Taylor, and current president and CEO Caroline Wanga also feature prominently in the series.

Golden Globe Award-winning actresses Taraji P. Henson, Gabrielle Union Wade, singer-actor Vanessa Williams, Sonny Hostin and producer and Motown They will also be joined by Suzanne De Pas, the former president of the production company.
