Detroit Lakes — The Fabricator Magazine has recognized
a Detroit Lakes-based custom metal fabricator, is the third largest metal fabrication business in the United States
The publication’s FAB 40 list lists the 40 most successful manufacturers based on reported revenue in the previous year. With annual revenue of $350 million, BTD has been in the top three on the list since 2016. BTD is a subsidiary of Otter Tail Corp.

Over the past several years, the company has expanded its operations by incorporating an additional 110,000 square feet of facility space, which now includes locations in Detroit Lakes and Lakeville, Minnesota; Washington, IL; and Dawsonville, Georgia.
To increase productivity and enhance capabilities, BTD has invested heavily in automation, robotics and production equipment. This includes the integration of various advanced tools such as bending machines, light manufacturing equipment and several 10,000 watt fiber sheet lasers.
For over 40 years, BTD has expanded its range of custom metalworking services and now includes a range of capabilities including metal fabrication, stamping, machining, powder coating, robotic welding and tubing. As a result, BTD has established itself as one of the top manufacturers serving customers who demand exceptional metalworking services.
The No. 1 metal fabricator in the U.S. is Mayville Engineering of Mayville, Wisconsin, with 2022 revenue of $539 million. The company has 2,346 employees at 20 locations.
In second place is Cadrex Manufacturing Solutions of Romeoville, Illinois, with $480 million in 2022 revenue. Cadrex has 2,000 employees in 21 locations.
In addition to being one of the top three metal manufacturers in the United States, BTD has also been recognized for its commitment to safety. The International Association of Manufacturers and Manufacturers honored the company’s Lakeville, Minnesota, plant with a 2022 Safety Honor Award and awarded it three Plant Safety Merit Awards.
